Do adults need driver's ed for the California permit test?

Adults 18 and older do not need driver's ed to apply for a California instruction permit. The DMV says adults must complete the driver license application, visit a DMV office, bring identity and residency documents, pay the fee, pass vision, take a photo, and pass the knowledge test. If you have never had a license, the DMV says you may hold an instruction permit until you are ready for the driving test.

What changes when I am 18 or older?

You are applying for an instruction permit, not a provisional instruction permit. The teen driver education requirement does not apply the same way it does for applicants under 18.

Do adults still need a permit?

If you are over 18 and have never had a driver license in any state or country, the DMV says you may obtain an instruction permit until you are ready to take your driving test.

What score do adults need on the knowledge test?

The DMV lists the passing score as 80 percent. Passing Lane recommends studying for 30 correct answers out of 36, which is the practical adult benchmark used in the app.

What if I already have a license from another state or country?

The DMV has separate steps for people with an out of state license or a license from another country. In many cases you still complete the application, prove identity and residency, pay the fee, pass vision, take a photo, and pass any required knowledge test.

Passing Lane is not only for teens. Adult first time drivers can use the same California question bank, Spanish support, and simulations to prepare with less guesswork.
