Driving Practice

What are California behind the wheel requirements for teens?

Before a teen can take the California driving test, the DMV says they must hold a provisional instruction permit for at least six months, complete driver education, complete six hours of professional driver training, and practice 50 hours with an adult 25 or older. At least 10 of the 50 practice hours must be at night.

When can my teen start practicing?

A provisional instruction permit is not valid until driver training begins and the instructor signs the permit. The permit lets a teen practice only with a licensed parent or guardian, a California driver 25 or older, or a certified driving instructor.

How many professional hours are required?

The DMV driver license page lists six hours of professional driver training as a requirement for applicants under 18 before the driving test.

How many family practice hours are required?

The DMV lists 50 hours of practice with an adult 25 or older who has a valid California driver license. At least 10 of those hours must be night driving.

Can a teen drive alone with a permit?

No. The DMV Fast Facts guide says an instruction permit does not allow a teen to drive alone at any time, not even to a DMV office for the driving test.

Use Passing Lane for the written test, then use the driving school page to plan the professional hours that come next.
